For Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket(1987), Former US Marine Corps Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey sent in a video demonstration of himself yelling abuse and obscenities for 15 minutes without stopping, repeating himself or even flinching, despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. As if that wasn't enough to impress the director, Ermey went to Kubrick himself to ask for the part, feeling that the other actors on set were "not up to snuff". When Kubrick declined, Ermey barked an order for Kubrick to stand up when being spoken to, which Kubrick instinctively obeyed. With that, R. Lee Ermey was awarded the part as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman.
