For James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day(1991), with Arnold Schwarzenegger's $15-million salary and his total of 700 words of dialogue, he was effectively paid $21,429 per word. "Hasta la vista, baby" cost $85,716.
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho(1960) was the first ever American film to show a toilet flushing on screen.
Mary Harron's American Psycho(2000) had various problems with designer labels during production. Cerruti agreed to allow Christian Bale to wear their clothes, but not when the character was killing anyone; Rolex agreed that anyone in the film could wear their watches except Bateman (hence the famous line from the book "Don't touch the Rolex" had to be changed to "Don't touch the watch"); Perry Ellis provided underwear at the last minute after Calvin Klein pulled out of the project; Comme des Garçons refused to allow one of their overnight bags to be used to carry a corpse, so Jean Paul Gaultier was used instead.
In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King(2003), Pippin's singing scene in the hall of Denethor largely came about after Philippa Boyens went out for a karaoke night-out with the younger male cast members and was struck by the quality of Billy Boyd's voice. Remembering that Denethor asks Pippin to sing him a song after Faramir heads off to war, she resurrected the lyrics from the novel and Boyd himself came up with the tune for it.
For Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket(1987), Former US Marine Corps Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey sent in a video demonstration of himself yelling abuse and obscenities for 15 minutes without stopping, repeating himself or even flinching, despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. As if that wasn't enough to impress the director, Ermey went to Kubrick himself to ask for the part, feeling that the other actors on set were "not up to snuff". When Kubrick declined, Ermey barked an order for Kubrick to stand up when being spoken to, which Kubrick instinctively obeyed. With that, R. Lee Ermey was awarded the part as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman.
In Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins(2005), the language that Ken Watanabe uses for his portrayal of the fake Ra's Al Ghul is neither Japanese nor Tibetan, or any known language at all. It was in fact just some gibberish that he made up himself for the role.
In Peter Weir's The Truman Show(1998), the scene in the bathroom where Truman uses a soap and draws on the mirror to do his Trumania bit was entirely improvised by Jim Carrey. In another take, he drew long curly hair and a dress.
For John G. Avildsen's Rocky(1976), writer(and also main star) Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the screenplay for the film after seeing the Chuck Wepner VS Muhammad Ali fight on March 24, 1975 at the Richfield Coliseum outside of Cleveland in Richfield, Ohio. Thirty-six year old Wepner was considered a moderate talent, but no one thought he had a hope against Ali. Indeed, no one expected Wepner to last more than three rounds. As such, the longer the fight went on past the opening three rounds, the more shocked people became; Wepner even managed to knock Ali down in the ninth round (although Ali has always maintained that Wepner was standing on his foot when he fell). Ali immediately opened a blistering offensive in an attempt to drop Wepner and for the next six rounds, he pummeled Wepner mercilessly, breaking his nose and opening large gashes above both his eyes. No matter how hard Ali hit him however, Wepner kept moving forward and continuing to fight (it was this specific aspect of the fight which inspired Stallone). Eventually, with 19 seconds left in the fifteenth and final round, Ali scored a TKO.
In Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby(2004), real-life boxing and kick-boxing champion Lucia Rijker(who also plays the part of Billy "The Blue Bear", the competitor who paralyses Hilary Swank's character in the film) was Hilary Swank's boxing coach.
In Joss Whedon's The Avengers(2012), Robert Downey Jr. reportedly hid food all over the lab set which nobody could find, which is why they just let him continue doing it. In the film, that was his actual food he was offering. The eating was not scripted, he was just hungry.
